We have a wonderful 2 yr old male that we have just noticed his top knot is all matted. Funny that the shearer didn't notice this last month when shearing but now it is up to us to fix it. I have only seen this once before when we bought a female from up north on a large farm. Is there a better way to correct this other than just shaving the whole top knot off. We know it will affect his looks and take a few yrs to grow back. Thanks for any help. At least it will let air into the top of his head and be more healthy for him when it is removed. JO

Your shearer probably didn't mention it because matted topknots are a common occurence.

Thanks for your help but we ended up having to cut most of it out as it was matted so tight. After almost 8 yrs in the business this is the first one of ours that this has happened to. We sure will keep a closer look at the top knots for now on. Jo

get a "slicker" brush used on dogs...a small one works best... break the matted part apart with your fingers as much as you can..then use the slicker brush on small segments of it at a time... use scissors to shape it as you loosen up the fiber.... this is a pretty common problem at shearing time...I do not recommend shearing off the whole topknot unless it is absolutely necessary. Trimming the top knot periodically throughout the year helps diminish major matting too.
