Wow!!! what a source of information!!! This is great!!! As I have read there are many ways too get rid of those pesky little varmints. Here's a recipe I found for homemade fly traps.

FLY PAPER

100 ml (3 1/2 oz) corn syrup
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp white sugar
6 strips brown paper (cut from a paper bag)

Combine the syrup & sugars in a shallow bowl.
Poke a hole at the top of each strip of brown paper. Soak paper in the syrup mixture over night.
Scrape paper strips across the edge of the saucer to remove excess syrup & hang the finished fly paper strips near windows & doors.
Replace when strips are covered.

I was hoping to hear from someone to see if anything has worked. I know we are close to spring coming upon us so it might be a little bit.

Was hoping to hear how some of you were going to try and control the fly population this year.

No, just the lure of paca poo brings the flies which brings the swallows, I guess. I have two sets of established nesting pairs and a new set building another nest! So far, they have built their nests on top of the light fixtures. I worried about the insulation properties of the nest creating heat, but the fixtures have the low wattage "green" bulbs in, so I don't think they get that hot.

Good question Mary, it's neat how nature takes care of her own if we let her. Glad to hear you know have tree pair of swallows, Kathy. Maybe one of us won't need fly traps.

Kathy, so glad to hear that you don't need anything to lure the flies in. Looks like your barn swallows will do all your fly control for free this year.

I must say that barn swallows are AWESOME! I just moved here a year ago and loaded up on all kinds of different fly control items so I would be prepared because when I boarded I used to hate getting eaten up by flies when I would visit my animals. Well, a year later I have yet to use ANY of my fly strips and gallon jug things because I have yet to see any flies except one here or there every so often. I have approx. 10 families of barn swallows living throughout the barn. Most have made their nests high up in the rafters (I have a hay loft). One nest, though, is in the back room where the rescued barn cats live but they don't seem to bother each other at all.

I've heard that they like to build nests in rafters. They seem to really enjoy using alpaca fiber as part of their nesting material.

Ok, so how do I get some barn swallows to move into my barn? I do have a small hayloft, but all I have right now are sparrows of some sort. I do have a couple of Guineas, but they take care of bugs that are on the ground, not the flies, especially the big horse flies that will be coming soon, probably just when my crias are born.
I am perfectly willing to supply some alpaca fiber for their nests, if they just will move in.

I've read that putting up nesting cups is one way to attract barn swallows. Here's a nice website: http://www.americanartifacts.com/smma/per/b4info.htm
Some highlights: "They seem to prefer building on a vertical wall of rough wood, often over a small projection such as a protruding knot or nail. Every nest in the colony has its rim approximately 1 1/2" from the ceiling. None of the nests are in a corner, suggesting that they prefer a 180 degree view from their nest."
Good luck!

I swear by Tempo SC! I have it always mixed in a 2.5 galon sprayer. It is safe and I use it on all surfaces of my barns and pastures. I usually clean up bean piles and spray the tempo on the spot. Its safe to use around animals.

Here is a site that might be helpful for fly traps if you are interested in going a different route.
