We have just a small herd and this is my first posting, although I refer to the site often. We are treating a few of our dams for mites following birthing. Two had heavy fleeces as we held off shearing and we were treating topically with bag balm. As we choose not to give Ivomec during the first and last trimesters, we began a course of Ivomec, planning to give it weekly for 4 weeks, along with Frontline (Fipronil) to feet whilst shampooing twice weekly. We are two weeks into this routine and ready to give the third Ivomec but the crias have diarrhoea. We have been giving Aluminal and probiotics but it continues despite the crias gaining weight nicely, playing etc. The crias are around a month old and one looks as though she has picked up some mites on her nose now. We are using bag balm on her and have not injected her.
We are wondering whether the Ivomec is passing through the milk and causing the diarrhoea in the cria. Diarrhoea is not usually a problem with our crias. We observe very strict hygeine and clean our paddocks twice daily. Before we ask our vet, who is great but not well-informed regards camelids, does anyone know whether the Ivomec could be to blame before we inject the dams again?
Thank you in advance for any advice, Judi

I treat all of my herd with Ivermectin(a generic brand of it) once every 30 days since I live in white tail deer territory, and have never had a problem with loose stools in crias or anyone else unless there was some other problem. I don't believe the Ivermectin is causing this. I would have fecals done.
If you have changed feed, and not done so gradually, that might also cause that. I have raised dogs for over 25 years and always make a feed change over a week to ten days, gradually adding more and more of the new stuff. Change in water can also cause it, but I would be more inclined to think that you might have a parasite issue here.

| Thank you for your comments Christiane. I wonder whether it might have less effect on the milk at the monthly dosage you give, we are doing it weekly for a 4 week period so more intensive? The pack does say that there is a withdrawal period for milk if used for human consumption so I presume it has been found to pass into the milk. I have just spoken to our vet who thinks that it might be the Ivomec so we'll not give the mums a dose tomorrow and see if the diarrhoea goes. It is less runny today which would fit with the Ivomec as it's now a week since we gave the second dose. The 2 crias are both doing well, good weight gains every day and lively and bright but we'll keep monitoring them. |

I'm not aware of Ivomec causing diarrhea in cria at any concentration, but even if it is causing loose poops, I'd personally continue your mite treatment and simply treat the cria with kaolin pectate or similar while they're loose. It seems a shame to loose what progress you have made.

Mary Jane, thank you for your reply. Not yet had faecals done because here in rural France it takes about 10 days to get lab results, so we wanted to try to do something immediate.
Using Aluminal and probiotics seems to be helping and now we realise that it's only 1 of the cria. We thought it was the two with diarrhoea because of the quantity but had only observed one directly passing it. She continues to gain weight at a good rate, no temp, lively etc. Have given her a dose of Veccoxan just in case it's cocci, although we've been lucky and not had any problems with cocci in 5 years, but I suppose there's always a first time! |
