Here in the Midwest, we are having a bad drought, with hay in short supply. Cost is up, and I am not sure it will be available at any price. What are people doing to deal with the situation? Any suggestions? How can be hay be hauled a long distance (over 75 miles). This situation is new to me! Unlike cattle or hogs, sending our animals to market is not an option!

Not far from you (in Pittsville, and formerly in Marshfield) is the Midwest Horse Welfare Foundation. Website is www.equineadoption.com. They know a lot of hay suppliers in your area and would probably share the list.

Mike and Jan,
I'm having the same problem. I can't find any anywhere around here. If it's this bad now, what's it going to be like 6 months from now?

Hi,
Have you checked Craig's List? That's been helpful down here. I also found some horse people who are cutting and baling hay off of CRM land that the governor released.

If any of you are a member of FB, they have a new board for Hay Buyers and Sellers. It is worth reading. They are putting together loads of hay to be shipped and in one case delivering to a far that is localized to many people so they can pick up the hay there and sare the cost of the shipping.
Worth a look.

We are not in a drought here in northern Wisconsin and the local farms we normally buy hay from are sold out already. Local people are buying it up in our area because of the drought south of us. And my guess is that local hay is also being sold to drought stricken states. If hay is running low already here, I'd hate to see what it will be like in late winter/early spring. We already secured our hay through next spring. We thought we were being proactive starting fairly early to secure hay for winter (this is the earliest we've done it) and it surprised us that local hay is scarcer already. If you can, buy hay as soon as possible because it will only get scarcer and pricier as winter/late spring nears.
