| Baby Suri boy born this morning at 11am. Seems a good size - will weigh after Mum has bonded. Ears are perky, up and walking within half an hour. Trouble is nearly three hours and I havent seen it latch on and drink - lots of trying. Have given 50ml of colostrum and he drank quite strongly. Just want to give him enough energy to keep trying to find the milk bar. Have another 100ml to give in an hour. Have put a coat on him as it came over cool. I just hope this one survives - needless to say it is being watched like a hawk! |

Stop Rick - you made me cry laughing with your "Ramblings"! Boy did I ever need a good laugh - thanks. Things that ring with truth are always funnier, and you were spot on.
CONGRATULATIONS Barb on your new baby boy! Glad to hear he is doing so well.

Are you really awake at this hour???If so, please reply. I had a little girl born this afternoon (yaaah!) been feeding her colostrum but it is sooo cold in barn she is still shivering a little. what are you doing about warmth? She was little 14:4. I have on a cria coat, layer of alpaca sweater--yes,about 4am it was all I could think of--and then another cria coat. If I have mom and cria in stall alone(stall that is warmer)mom just cries. If I let them out into group pen it is colder but mom is happier. What shoud I do?

Gorgeous cria, Barbara! Well worth the wait and worry!
Harriett,
Is the cria completely dry under all the coats and sweater? If not, dry her with a hair dryer, then keep her and mum in a pen in the warmest part of the barn. Place a heating lamp overhead if you can. I would not worry about mum complaining, so long as she can see other alpacas, she'll be fine, and she will bond with the baby. Keep plenty of straw in the pen, an electric heating pad for the cria to kush on would be helpful too. Give mum a warm bucket of water, she may enjoy a nice warm drink.
Best of luck with the new baby, what's her name?

Thank You. My big concern was mom's stress level in the warmer stall, but I guess she will just have to cope till it is a bit warmer. Mom is Delightful de Negra and herdsire was Excelsior so little girl is WindFire's Delightful Elixer. beautiful little black girl.

Great name, Harriett, it'll be a mouth-full for the announcer when she wins her first ribbon! I had a girl named Delcita and the announcer turned that into 'Delicious', so it need not be much of a tongue twister, but we got a laugh from it anyway.
