I use flystrips a lot!! They are pretty gross, but if you get the non-smelly kind, they kill a lot of flies without a lot of maintenance - except for putting them in the trash. I hang them high so they can't stick on anyone as you walk by. I had my barn built high enough to accomodate horses, should I ever move and want my property to be more attractive to buyers. There are many types, but I just use the little tubular ones from the dollar store or TS (usually 4 in pkg). Be careful, though, I bought them once from a flea market and they were all dried up and useless.

Question for those using the vinegar, garlic, water spray against flies, does it have to be cider vinegar or can I use white vinegar?

Joey, did you know you can make your own fly strips? I have the recipe somewhere. Found it here you go maybe cheaper for fly control in the long run.
FLY PAPER
100 ml (3 1/2 oz) corn syrup 1 tbsp brown sugar 1 tbsp white sugar 6 strips brown paper (cut from a paper bag)
Combine the syrup & sugars in a shallow bowl. Poke a hole at the top of each strip of brown paper. Soak paper in the syrup mixture over night. Scrape paper strips across the edge of the saucer to remove excess syrup & hang the finished fly paper strips near windows & doors. Replace when strips are covered.

| Neat recipe. Has anyone tried this for a fly trap yet. Curious to know if it works as good as store bought. |

We have used heavy duty Sullivan Turbo Fans {two per shed} for years. They are expensive so I bought them in rounds as they went on sale at season's end so I have 9 now. We have never replaced ANY of them they last 4ever. The switches go but the motors are excellent. We also have Barn Swallows and use Renegade Fly Tapes. We have to replace the tapes during the heavy fly times every 5 days. They fill up and our gravel crush seems to coat the tape and the flies can land on them or their caught fly buddies. We clean all pens and loafing areas twice daily in summer and pastures only once a week. We use the tractor to flip the new poop pile {we have an old compost one we are spreading this Fall} to keep the flies from breeding in that fresh pile. I have to mention that I have been to VA Wildlife Center twice with a flytrap with a poor Swallow stuck in it. IT is an hour each way and not much fun for the swallow. Someone told me you can use some sort of Sport Tape Remover that will also remove fly tape sticky from birds... Amanda Schwab Little Wing Farm 6327 Jefferson Mill Rd. | Oh that poor swallow, did it make it out of the fly trap alive and well??? Looks like you have a firm grip on fly control. You know you can make your own strips? |
