Beginner Knitting (limit 6 per class)

Skill Level: Beginner
For those who have never knitted or have tried to learn and need help. You will learn the basic knit stitch and one method of cast on.
Supplies: Knitting needles; one skein of 100% Alpaca yarn included with registration fee.
Basic Cable (limit 6 per class)

We will knit a cup cozy using basic cable patterns.

May 15, 2010 - Gainesville FL Camelid Health Seminar: Scheduled Topics and Course Descriptions Camelid Herd Health Dr. Martha Mallicote DVM, University of Florida
This session will summarize general herd management recommendations for Florida herds. A population medicine approach will be the focus of the session. Herd husbandry, vaccinations, laboratory testing, shearing, body condition scoring and nutritional basics will be included.
Parasites Dr. Lisa Williamson DVM, University of Georgia
Dr. Williamson will discuss Haemonchus contortus and Eimeria macusaniensis, as these 2 internal parasites seemingly wreak the most havoc in southeastern U.S. camelid herds. She will also talk about some other parasites of interest such as Tricostrongylus, whipworms and Nematodirus. She will address diagnostic tests, and provide some treatment guidelines for internal parasites.

Mr. Storey will talk about the use of FAMACHA© and other other indicators of parasitism. Validating the FAMACHA© system for use with llamas and alpacas: Answers the burning questions: What is FAMACHA©? Can it be used with South American camelids? Why validation is necessary? Validation process and the interesting results. When can I get my card?
Heat Stress - Assessment of the Down Camelid Dr. Amanda House, University of Florida
This session will discuss the evaluation and most common causes of a down camelid. Heat stress, anemia, and P. tenuis will be the primary etiologies discussed. Diagnosis and treatment strategies for each will be included.
Choke and Colic Dr. Johanna Elfenbein, University of Florida
This session will discuss gastrointestinal diseases of camelids. Primary areas of discussion will include choke, colic, and infectious causes of diarrhea. Diagnosis and general treatment strategies will be presented.
Cria Care and Disease in the Post-Partum Period Dr. Amanda House, University of Florida
This lecture will briefly discuss care of the late pregnant female and normal delivery. It will cover the normal exam parameters for a newborn cria, the importance of colostrum, failure of passive transfer, and diagnosis and treatment of septicemia in the cria.
